The lecture combines theoretical and experimental aspects to investigate the nucleon structure.The first part will focus on laser spectroscopy of the muonic hydrogen atom, which revealed a 4% smaller proton rms charge radius than previous measurements. The theoretical background will be presented, as well as some detailed treatment of the unique low-energy muon beam line and the complex laser system required for conducting the experiment. Also, some aspects of the proton radius puzzle will be discussed and an outlook to further use of muonic hydrogen will be given.
The second part of the course will cover techniques and challenges in the determination of the proton form factors with electron scattering and the resulting puzzles of the proton radius and the proton form factor ratio. It will be discussed how the latter can be solved by two-photon exchange.
For the course it will be useful if the participants have some basic experience with fitting data, preferably in ROOT/C++ or Python.
